Bodega Ortega: Coconut Grove's New Neighborhood Bodega for Matcha and Tequeños

Bodega Ortega: Coconut Grove's New Neighborhood Bodega for Matcha and Tequeños

Looking for a cozy neighborhood bodega in Coconut Grove? Bodega Ortega on Bird Avenue is the spot. It's part corner market, part sandwich counter, part ventanita, and it's where we grabbed an iced matcha, tequeños, pan de bono and breakfast sandwiches. Here's everything you need to know before you go, plus how I'd turn a quick coffee run into a full Grove morning.

What Is Bodega Ortega?

Bodega Ortega is a family-run corner store at 2859 Bird Ave. in Coconut Grove. Brothers Carlos, Alvaro and Sebastian Ortega opened it in mid-May 2026, and it already feels like a place you grew up going to. You can follow along on Instagram at @bodegaortegaco.

The brothers were born in Puerto Rico to Cuban parents before their family moved to Miami. In Puerto Rico, the person behind the bodega counter knows your name, and that's the feeling they wanted to bring to the Grove. There's a sweet story behind it too. According to Miami New Times, the brothers built the bodega in honor of their mom, who passed away in January 2025. In her memory they also started the Te Amo Foundation to support mental health awareness. As a hypnotherapist, that part really got me. Family photos line the walls, and you can feel the love the moment you walk in.

A lot of longtime Grove favorites have closed lately, so a new spot that's clearly built for locals, and priced for them on purpose, is a big deal.

What We Ordered at Bodega Ortega

We went in hungry and came out with a little bit of everything. Here's what we snagged.

Iced Matcha (With Rotating Flavors)

If you're a matcha girl like me, this one's for you. Their iced matcha is refreshing and exactly what you want on a hot Miami morning, and the fun part is that the flavors rotate about every three months, so there's always something new to try. Ask what's on the board when you go. Matcha has a real following here, and the iced matcha latte is a favorite. Coffee people are covered too: the counter pours cortaditos, coladas, café con leche, iced lattes and fresh-squeezed orange juice.

Fresh Tequeños and Pan de Bono

New to these? Tequeños are a Venezuelan classic: sticks of salty white cheese wrapped in dough and fried until golden. You'll find them at every Miami party, and they disappear fast. Pan de bono is a Colombian cheese bread made with cassava (yuca) starch and cheese. It's soft, slightly chewy and perfect with a coffee.

Bodega Ortega gets its tequeños from a Venezuelan supplier and its pan de bono from a Colombian one, which is very Miami. The grab-and-go case also has Argentine empanadas, so you can do a full Latin bakery tour in one stop.

Breakfast Sandwiches

Breakfast is mostly served on bagels. Think bacon-egg-and-cheese style sandwiches and an everything bagel with chopped jalapeño cream cheese, plus add-ons like avocado and smoked trout. It's simple, filling and done right. If you come back later in the day, the lunch sandwiches are named after members of the Ortega family, and every sandwich can be modified for dietary restrictions.

The Vibe: Old Miami, Right in the Grove

Bodega Ortega feels like the Coconut Grove so many of us fell in love with: laid-back, friendly and a little bohemian. It's not a fancy café where you camp out with a laptop. It's a real neighborhood bodega where you grab your coffee, chat with whoever's behind the counter and keep your day moving.

The market side is fun to browse. You'll see the usual snacks next to local and better-for-you picks, Latin staples like chifles and chicharrones, a refrigerated organic section, beer and wine, household basics and even a section for your dog. Much of what's on the shelves came from neighbors asking for it, which tells you everything about the place.

Make a Grove Morning of It

Bodega Ortega is a perfect first stop, but why stop there? Here's how I'd turn it into a slow Coconut Grove morning:

  • Do a Bird Avenue matcha crawl. Basquet is also on Bird Avenue, right next to Mimi Yoga, and it's my go-to post-yoga ritual. Read my Basquet matcha latte review and compare for yourself.
  • Take your tequeños to the bay. Grab-and-go means you can take breakfast with you. Peacock Park on the bayfront is a classic Grove spot to sit under the trees and look at the water.
  • Make it a brunch weekend. If you want a sit-down meal on another day, check out my Coconut Grove brunch post for a garden brunch idea.

Who Bodega Ortega Is For (Plus a Local Tip)

Bodega Ortega is for Grove locals who want a reliable morning coffee spot, matcha lovers looking for something new, and anyone who misses the old-school Miami corner store. It's also great for a casual date: grab a matcha and a tequeño, then go for a walk. Visiting from out of town? It's an easy way to try Venezuelan and Colombian bites in one stop.

Local tip: Ask about the off-menu drink, China's Coquito Latte. It's named after the brothers' late mother and her famous coquito recipe, and it's made on a matcha or coffee base with coconut, cinnamon and honey. It's not on the board, so you have to ask for it by name.
