Local elections have a great impact on our lives and it’s hard to find information on local candidates. I have some resources below to help you investigate candidates for the upcoming 2024 election.
Melba Pearson’s 2024 Primary Election Voter Guide
Melba Pearson is an attorney specializing in civil rights and criminal law, with an emphasis on policy. She is the Director of Prosecution Projects for Florida International University’s Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy. Her work centers on prosecutorial reform and expanding the use of Prosecutorial Performance Indicators. Before joining FIU, Ms. Pearson spent three years as Deputy Director of the ACLU of Florida where she worked to change police practices, expand voting rights, and reform the criminal justice system. Previously, Ms. Pearson was an Assistant State Attorney in Miami-Dade County for 16 years, culminating as Assistant Chief in the Career Criminal/Robbery Unit supervising junior attorneys while prosecuting homicides. In 2020, she was the progressive candidate for Miami-Dade State Attorney, with a strong showing across party lines as a first time candidate.
Ms. Pearson also owns the boutique law firm MVP Law, where she consults for other attorneys as well as nonprofit groups on victim’s rights, community engagement, crisis communications, policing, criminal justice and civil rights concerns.

I also recommend the website vote411.org to learn where candidates running for office in your community stand on the issues. Only candidates that appear on your ballot, based on the address you enter, will be listed. You can print, email, or text the information to use as a reference when you actually vote.
